A controversial city police detective has complained to the Alberta Labour Board about the Edmonton Police Association’s refusal to pay his legal bills.
Det. Ken Montgomery says the association is legally obliged to give him financial support as he fights a lawsuit and a police disciplinary hearing.
Desiree Silina McManus, a 22-year-old police agent, is suing Montgomery and the city police for alleged misconduct by him. She claims to have suffered humiliation, fear and distress when Montgomery asked her to strip while training her for undercover work. Montgomery denies her allegations.
The detective and the association disagree whether he was on duty when the incident occurred.
A list of allegations about police misconduct made by Montgomery in March has led to an independent investigation of the Edmonton Police Service.
He claims that the disciplinary actions against him are politically motivated.
Dennis Bykowski, the labour board’s director of settlement, confirmed Montgomery had filed the complaint and the board is awaiting a reply from the association.
