The system that Edmonton police use for dealing with officer misconduct is old, inadequate and should be retired, says the chair of the Alberta Law Enforcement Review Board.

Patrick Knoll asked Wednesday that the Edmonton Police Commission review the way police conduct internal investigations at their November meeting.

“This model has failed,” Knoll said, referring to a system that has been used in the United States, Australia and other parts of Canada.

John Lindsay, Edmonton’s controversial police chief, has resigned after accepting a buyout package from the city’s police commission.

Lindsay steps down from the top job in exchange for a new role as a consultant for the police commssion (sic) until June 2001. He will continue to receive his $147,000 annual salary during that period.

The package totals $310,000 — money that represents the final two years of his contract, which expires in 2003.
