EDMONTON - Edmonton’s police chief is ultimately responsible for investigating the actions of his own officers in a drunk-driving stakeout operation, says the city police commission’s public complaints monitor.

In an analysis of the law governing the investigation, Larry Jackson determined that a complaint of police misconduct was rightfully referred to Chief Fred Rayner and Rayner is responsible for ensuring the incident is investigated — apparently by whoever he sees fit.

So went my e-mail, my phone and my office door these last few days, as people responded emotionally and in great numbers to my column last Friday, in which I argued against jumping to conclusions on the so-called police “stakeout” scandal.

Some people think I’m a cop-lovin’ dweeb. Others were relieved to see someone put some responsibility back on the Edmonton Police Commission and its chairman, Martin Ignasiak.

EDMONTON - The Criminal Trial Lawyers’ Association of Alberta has called on Edmonton’s police chief to remove his deputy from an investigation into a drunk-driving sting operation, which allegedly targeted the police commission’s chairman.

Edmonton Police Chief Fred Rayner on Wednesday ordered two internal investigations into a Nov. 18 stakeout of a downtown bar.
