EDMONTON – The Kiwanis Club of Edmonton presented Staff Sgt. Jamie Ewatski with its 2008 Top Cop award at a ceremony this morning.
The award is given annually to a full-time member of the Edmonton Police Service who is nominated by a colleague or a member of the community for their volunteer work.
Ewatski, who has been with the EPS for 30 years, has worked with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program since 1995, graduating more than 600 school children through the program.
“I know there are kids out there facing a choice and something Jamie said days or years ago resounded in their minds and they made the right choice,” said Harvey Hiob, a teacher at Fraser Elementary School, where Ewatski currently volunteers.
Laurie Billings, president of the Oil Capital chapter of the Edmonton Kiwanis Club, said Ewatski was chosen from the eight nominees this year because of the variety of his volunteer experience, which also includes coaching youth soccer and flag football.
Ewatski is currently appealing a July assault conviction for an incident where police entered a house without a warrant and then pepper sprayed the man inside, who also suffered a broken rib.
Billings said that Ewatski’s legal matter had no bearing whatsoever on his community service and was not a factor in giving him the award.
